Barbara Shain

UX Researcher

When you were a kid, what career did you want to have?

I wanted to be a lot of things: a writer, poet, meteorologist, truck driver, geologist, pilot, musician, professor, activist… I’m lucky to be a designer, because I get to dabble in all kinds of things.

What do you do at Career Cruising?

As a User Interface Designer, I make sure the interactions people have with our software are easy.

What do you love to do outside of work?

I love to rock climb, because it teaches me that I can accomplish seemingly impossible things with practice, determination, and a little risk-taking. Also, it’s super fun and looks cool.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I had dreadlocks in university. I got rid of them because they were a surprising amount of work to maintain.

What’s your favourite book? Why?

100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I love the colourful and magical world this book creates.
